[Les châtiments : draft of verses for the poem / Victor Hugo]. [1852]

Hugo's poem Les châtiments addressed the conditions of the poor in contrast to the wealthy and supporters of Louis-Napoléon (Napoleon III), who seized power in the coup d'état of Dec. 2, 1851. This draft is written on the verso of a printed broadside titled: Au peuple. Citoyens ... [signed by] Victor Hugo, Fombertaux and Philippe Faure, 31 oct. 1852. The poem, some 380 pages in length, was published in Paris in 1853.
